Medical applications

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) is an automatic massage system used as a medical device for treating various conditions of the lymphatic and vascular systems. IPC is increasingly being used, particularly in the treatment of edema in the legs or arms (often resulting from surgery or radiation therapy), to support treatment by a physician or therapist. A major advantage is that patients can continue treatment at home under the supervision of a physician or therapist. This simplifies the maintenance of the lymphatic and vascular systems, and you can often gradually reduce your visits to your therapist or physician. If you are using it for medical purposes, you must remain under regular supervision of your therapist or physician. The treating physician will develop a treatment plan with you, specifying the appropriate program, pressure, time, and frequency.

How does IPC work?

The inflatable cuff is placed around the leg, arm, or (part of) the torso. A cuff has 4 air chambers (home systems) or 6 air chambers (professional systems). There are separate cuffs for legs, arms, waist, or the entire torso. A program is selected on the device (depending on the treatment goal), and the time and pressure are set. On some devices, such as the LX9max and the MK400, the inflation speed can also be adjusted. The chambers are then filled with air and deflated according to the program. This provides a massage that stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic flow. By stimulating lymphatic flow, waste products and excess fluid are removed from the leg or arm, reducing swelling.

The benefits of IPC

Massage using IPC has several benefits:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Drainage of lymphatic fluid and waste products
  • Reduces stress
  • Reduces pain and discomfort
  • Improves immunity
  • Faster wound healing
  • Relaxation

IPC devices from Doctor Life

Doctor Life is a brand of DS Maref, and they have been marketing devices for lymphatic drainage, among other things, since 1986. The Doctor Life 4MAX is the latest model for home use. The 4MAX is a quiet and compact 4-chamber device with 4 programs, 10 pressure settings, and a timer. The LX9max is a semi-professional model for use both at home and in the office. Its compact design makes it easy to take to patients. The LX9max is a 4-chamber device with 4 programs. The pressure and time can be adjusted more precisely, and the inflation speed can also be adjusted.

The professional 6-chamber model, the MK400, is a larger and heavier model that allows for even more precise pressure and time adjustment. The MK400 has three programs with a reverse mode. The inflation speed can also be adjusted. The device is designed for intensive and regular use.
